It’s almost that time again. National Novel Writing Month, also known as NaNoWriMo is only a few weeks away at this point and I am not actually as ready as I’d like to be. Are you?
I’m trying to plot out things. I have an idea of what needs to happen in the story, but I’m also left with a lot of plot holes.That’s what I am trying to get some work done on.
My characters actually introduced themselves to me a few months back and they had to sit and wait patiently for me to be ready to work with them. November is when they get their turn and chance to shine. Which came first for you this year? The characters or the plot? Honestly my plot usually surfaces first, but this year, it was these two amazing characters that showed up in the middle of another piece I am working on, and I had to remove them because they don’t belong. They will get their own story.
So what you are you working on for NaNoWriMo this year? Are you in the planning stages, developing plot time or are you going to wing the whole thing?
I am freaking out a little because I have my plot generally thought out….(I have the first 1/3 and the last 1/3 with a gaping hole with only vague ideas not fleshed out yet.) This is what worries me. And I’m worried the whole thing is hoakie. And I’m worried I’ll say everything wrong. And this makes me angry at myself because I’m doing this crap to myself before I’ve even started.
Help.
@Janie, I’m glad I’m not the only one who is still trying to flesh some things out. Like I said, I have several plot holes that need some filling in. I’m working on that though.
Don’t freak out just yet. You have to give yourself permission to write and write badly if its what it takes to get to 50,000. The editing comes later, and it might be a little hoakie now because you don’t know where anything is going but when you sit down to write it, perhaps your characters will lead you or the plot will just draw you right through it. Do as much planning as you can and put that inner critic to rest. I believe in you.
